When you cannot find exactly what you are looking for on the pre-owned market and you do not have the time to wait for a Newbuild to be delivered, refitting an existing yacht to your specifications is often the perfect solution. And it is one that can add excellent added value for when you eventually come to sell.
Our independent and impartial specialist Refit Managers guide you on every step of the project. They represent your interests throughout, ensuring all providers are consistently delivering to specification, timing and budget, as well as providing you with full and transparent reporting (and guidance) on progress, projections and running costs as often or as little as you wish.
Detailed quotations with fixed prices and minimal exclusions are essential, developed by the Project Manager and crew through a clear worklist and specifications. Once the package is ready, shipyards are invited to bid with detailed quotes. JMS reviews proposals against budgets, deadlines, warranty terms, and certification requirements to provide an independent assessment. Early contract and specification reviews help identify issues, save costs, and improve delivery timelines.
As the contract review concludes and signing approaches, plans must be set to move forward. We work with Owners, the shipyard, and subcontractors to fine-tune details for a successful refit. Setting the schedule, agreeing on payments, and identifying critical path items like Owner-supplied works are essential. JMS’s experience ensures effective coordination of priority issues to start the project in the right direction.
Once planning is complete and contracts signed, the required on-site resources become clear. JMS offers consultancy, working seamlessly with advisers like the Owner’s representatives, broker, designer, and crew. We hold regular shipyard meetings to coordinate the process with all key parties. These meetings review progress against the contract and address outstanding issues with the yard.
We use a tailored Project Management work list with priorities, cost tracking, and delivery timelines, plus detailed specification sheets for major items to secure fixed-price quotes. Weekly status reports provide progress and financial updates, while monthly reports include quality control advice and technical recommendations. We also address issues as they arise and suggest improvements where needed. All project information is stored in our online system, ensuring instant access and full transparency for all authorised parties.
As the project nears completion, JMS coordinates the crew, prepares the yacht for cruising, oversees sea trials, and ensures all documentation and certifications are in place. We manage manuals, drawings, and certificates from the yard and contractors while conducting quality checks and finalizing delivery details. Upon handover, JMS provides a full technical and financial report on the project. No matter the size of the refit, we deliver success through communication, attention to detail, and a focus on quality, while making the process enjoyable.
